September 21 – December 16

Abstracted Women at the Peabody

Opening Reception: September 24, 5:30 – 7:30 PM

Peabody Auditorium, 600 Auditorium Blvd., Daytona Beach

The Peabody Auditorium brings together artists Judy Gilmer, Margaret  Schnebly Hodge and Patricia H.K. Zalisko in Abstracted Women for an exhibition in the Rose Room Gallery from September 21 through December 16, 2009.   You may meet the artists at an opening reception on September 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, which precedes the Peabody’s opening season production of Cirque Dreams at 7:30 PM. A panel discussion with the three artists moderated by a critically acclaimed art historian/artist, Louise Lieber, will also be conducted on November 21st from 3-5 p.m. in the gallery. Guests who wish to visit the gallery may enter through the Wild Olive Street west side doorway where a new patio bar is featured.

Abstracted Women at the Peabody presents works by women who paint abstractly, not necessarily abstracted paintings of women.  These three powerful artists reside in eastern Volusia County.  Although they are members of many of the same art organizations, individually they have up until now exhibited both within and outside our state or country, in galleries and museums, earning accolades and prestigious awards or commissions. Abstracted Women represents their first joint exhibition.

Curator Mary E. McBride believes that the art of Gilmer, Hodge and Zalisko comes together as a strong statement of redefined women’s’ work. They are not timid in their brushstrokes or use of color. Their art emblazons their surfaces with strength of conviction and confidence of skill.  Viewers are taken to their own places of discovery without ever leaving the room or being forced to see the world as the artists do. Their abstract art is simply a portal through which the viewer may step.

Zalisko states, “The extent to which my art consistently captures a slice of the magic and mystery of life determines whether it can be shared with others.”  To achieve this, she may start with the characters of language or music, and then analyze, obliterate, modify and add until the work becomes that external vision of her internal ideas.

Gilmer finds that as “…an Abstract Expressionist, automatism, or responding to the surface is both my process and my subject. It is an extension of my experiences and emotions and is my contribution to the collective energy we all share.”

“I simply begin with a toned ground and find a figure in the tone,” Hodge said. “The figurative form acts as a catalyst to other line and mark.  The responsive method probes and expands implied space. “

The Rose Room Gallery is free and open to the public during the following hours: Monday through Friday, 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. The gallery is also open during all theater events.  For more information about the Peabody schedule please phone 386.671.3462 or visit www.peabodyauditorium.org.  For more information about the exhibits in the Rose Room Gallery, please phone 386.736.3039 or email marymcbridearts@gmail.com.

                 Artists' Prepare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an exciting holiday season on Canal Street and the Artist Workshop has been invited to participate. We will open our doors and show off our wears. It will be a good time to sell our work and show off our talent. It will make people aware of our location. We can fill our walls with your art work and for those of you interested in making Christmas Cards to sell, we will have a card rack available.

These events are an opportunity to sell our work and get involved with the community. So let's get painting and have some fun at the same time.
